Chinese Deny Use of Psychotherapy for Dissidents

The Information office of the State Council in Beijing says that Western Media claims that China uses psychotherapy as a means of social and political control, and to suppress dissidents, is “malicious slander. . .  The accusation that China uses psychiatric hospitals for political purposes,” or that it “detains dissidents as psychopathic patients, lacks evidence and is totally irresponsible.”

Chinese law [this statement continues] says that any mentally ill person who is diagnosed as such, who has behaved dangerously, is not charged as a criminal. Rather, his supervisors and relatives must have him treated, at government expense. Dissidents who are said in the Western press to be suffering from government policy are, in fact, seriously disturbed, and are being treated in hospitals, humanely.
