General Edwin R. Micewski,
Ph.D. Brigadier General Edwin R. Micewski,
Ph.D., specializes in
political theory and social philosophy,
particularly the philosophy of law and state,
moral questions especially regarding the use of
force, and the ethics of the military. He has
lectured widely at the National Defense Academy,
Vienna, and at the University of Linz, and has
served as a research fellow and guest professor
with the Department of National Security Affairs
at the Naval Postgraduate School. As the
Austrian representative he is carrying out
Mobile Education Programs mainly in Europe in
cooperation with the Center for Civil-Military
Relations.
From 1973-1976 General Micewski attended the
Military Academy "Maria Theresia", in Wiener
Neustadt, Austria. From 1976-1992 he completed
several assignments as a tank officer,
instructor in military leadership, and service
with the United Nations in the Middle East. In
1992 he earned a M.A. in Philosophy and
Political Science at the University of Vienna.
In 1995 he earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy at the
same university. From 1995-2001 he attended the
Institute for Strategic Research of the National
Defense Academy in Vienna; was the national
representative to the Partnership for Peace
Initiative in the cooperation area "Political
Control of Armed Forces and Defense Structures";
and a member of the Science Commission to the
Austrian Ministry of Defense. Since February of
2001 he was the Director of the Institute for
Humanities and Social Sciences at the National
Defense Academy.
General Micewski has published the following
books: Limits of Violence—Limits of
Non-Violence, Peter Lang, 1998 (in German);
Ethics and International Relations, Literas,
2001; Protection of Cultural Property in the
Event of Armed Conflict—A Challenge in Peace
Support Operation, NDA Publication Series,
2002; and Political Philosophy, Ethics, and
the Military. He has also written essays and
articles in journals as
Oesterreichische Militaerische Zeitschrift,
Truppendienst, Jahrbuch der politischen
Erneuerung, Sapientia Papers, Freie Argumente,
National Defense Academy Publication Series).
