The Dark Underside: Cultic Misappropriation
of Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis
David A. Halperin, M. D.
Abstract
The history of psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy is littered with
cultic misappropriation of sound practice, technique, and theory. This article
uses historical and contemporary examples to illustrate this species of
misappropriation. It describes some of the issues that arise in working with
individuals who were subjected to cultic 'Therapy' and who sought help to
reintegrate themselves into the mainstream world. Further, this article
discusses certain issues that arise in working with family members of those who
were subjected to cultic therapy.
